So some of you may know "badges" aka awards you can get on different websites.
For instance on rosalind aka https://rosalind.info/ these are my current
achievements:

(I had more in the past with another account, but I managed to lose that old account
by forgetting the password and not able to find where I stored it...)
So, yep, these are mostly just images really. Nothing super sophisticated. Icons for
the win.
That's one example. I think you can find many more examples on other websites
for such "badges" / awards.
How about rubygems.org also uses something like that? Of course I am not saying
it should 1:1 use what other websites use. It should use what makes sense to
rubygems.org; and I don't suggest to use tons of different icons, just a subset,
say, 5 or so.
What could these indicate? Well ... no idea. :) But, for instance, you could have an
icon for "uses secure setup" for a gem author, or "5 million downloads badge"
and so on and so forth. I guess we can make a list of which things may be
interesting to have, and focus on the top 5 or top 10 ideas or so, whatever
seems appropriate.
The icons can then be shown in a place where they do not distract too much. I
am not proposing these icons should distract from the main usability of
rubygems.org at all! They could be smaller in size than e. g. the ones on
rosalind, perhaps 32x32 or 24x24 depending on what may fit best to the
device (I find smartphone icons too small on desktop systems but the
reverse may also apply for smartphone users seeing very large icons,
so I don't know what the ideal compromise may be, perhaps 32x32 seems
best).
What would the benefit be of this suggestion?
Well ... there is not really a lot of practical intrinsic value, but I think these
icons can look cute, and may provide quick easy visual cues if used sparingly.
For instance, users could quickly see projects or project authors that have
made larger contributes or quality-centered contributions to rubygems.org
or the overall gems infrastructure, as well as the quality of their gems. I
understand that some of this is hard to evaluate, but I am kind of not
suggesting a "100% accurate system", more a system of encouragement
for people collecting a few badges over time with their projects on
rubygems.org.
So what's your opinion on it? As it is mostly just an idea, feel free to close
this at any time, but if I may suggest to perhaps keep it open for 2-3 weeks
in the event other folks may chime in.
(We could also lateron extend that system if it proves to be useful. There are
always more badges to be gathered! And it could be used as weak incentive
for people to gather badges. :D So one could also give per-project badges
such as "quality of documentation thumbs up badge" per project; here we
would have to find some criteria to be able to automatically award this
for projects, which is hard for quality when humans have to read and qualify,
but it could in theory be tied to a system where users can upvote projects
too on a per project basis ... but this probably would require more effort,
so I am not suggesting that; just giving ideas how it may be used if human
interaction and human evaluation is required.)
