The only requirement for mesh adaptation is that the 3D geometry use the polyhedral mesh (the adjoint solver doesn't work with other mesh types). However, in order to create a 3D geometry for shape optimization using STAR-ASO, follow these additional guidelines.

1. Select the morpher and adjoint models

In the phsyics continuum node, you have to select the morpher and the ajdoint, as shown below.

2. Use the polyhedral mesher

Our experience suggests that the adjoint doesn't work with other mesh types. See picture below.

3. Create point set linked to table

This is a three-step process:

3.1 Create a CSV file containing location of control points

3.2. Create a "file table" linked to the CSV file

3.3. Create a point set linked to the "file table"

4. Create cost functions

In STAR-CCM+, the adjoint operates on any "cost function" you defined. This is a two-step process:

3.1 Create a force report (e.g. CL and CD)

2.2 Add these reports to the list of cost functions

4. Setup morpher boundary conditions

Finally, you must specify which boundary surfaces you want to deform and which one you want to keep fixed. To do so, go to the regions node and select the appropriate option for each boundary as shown below.
