<biogHist>

The company began in 1839 with a partnership between William and Alexander Thomson who built up routes to Europe, Canada, the far East and the Baltic. The company changed its name to Ben Line Steamers Ltd in 1919.

During the 1970s the Ben Line diversified into oil drilling, container ships and the transportation of chemical and formed the Ben Line Ship Management Ltd with Galbraith Wrightson Ltd in 1972. The company took over the Sheaf Steam Shipping Co. in 1976 but with shipping in decline, it combined with East Asiatic Co., Copenhagen, to run a weekly service to the Far East. The company sold their remaining ships in 1992.
