Filtering images by variant selection

Is there any way to replace the radio buttons of variants for a select while keeping the functionality to change images on selection?

Yep. You can override the view and present that however you like. Keeping the image functionality working might require a couple tweaks, but you can override the JS if you can't make it work with your new markup.
