I am the maintainer and Chief Wrangler of Universal, a library that aims to provide plug-in replacement number systems for any and all native types. The reason for my interest in number systems is two fold:

1. in fast hardware, we always play with number systems and their mathematical approximation of the computation.
2. in digital signal processing, and now Deep Learning, number systems make the difference whether or not a solution can scale

If you want to work with number system innovations and adaptive or multi-precision algorithms to build high-performance solutions you need a no-friction capability to plug and play number systems, and Universal is custom built for that purpose.

The problem of course is that utilizing new number systems is a domain expert problem. It requires deep insight into the application and use case to understand what can be approximated. This makes a discussion forum like GitHub Discussions essential as bringing together domain experts, algorithm designers, numerical analysts, mathematicians, hardware designers, and system designers will be essential to build next generation solutions that optimize computational efficiency to solve problems hereto unsolvable.
