Footnote in figcaption?

Hi!

Love the theme, thanks for the work! This is not particular to your theme, but I wondered if maybe you knew the answer.

I'd like to put a footnote in a figcaption embedded directly into a markdown post

  <img src="/assets/img/pexels/travel.jpeg" />
  <figcaption>A caption [^1]</figcaption>
</figure>

[^1]:
    {% include citation.html key="ref1" %}

However this renders the [^1] as raw text. The only solution I've found is to use a css class to style text following the inclusion of an image. However, I'd really like to have the footnote in a figcaption because of no good reason.

Would you happen to know how to accomplish this?
