What is planned and when is EOL?

No development will occur on it with the limited resources available being put into VFS mounts instead.
As soon as ZFS and ceph both support VFS idmap, shiftfs will be fully retired.

@stgraber One year after the last info, I would like to ask for an update. Whats the status on the EOL of shiftfs and support for ZFS and Ceph by alternative methods?

ZFS 2.2 which is currently going through release candidates upstream will have VFS idmap support.

For Ceph, @mihalicyn and @brauner have been working with the kernel community to get it included. Patches are still being discussed so we don't have a clear ETA unfortunately.

It's still a goal of the team at Canonical to get rid of shiftfs by Ubuntu 23.10 but we're mostly at the mercy of the upstream kernel community now.
