at the very least, should be a meter that shows current sound level as the filled amount, with more-filled indicating louder and having a more intense color. There should also be a way to see the most recent amplitude peak within a certain threshold. I don't know what these meters are called, but they exist on basically every radio and mixing tool in existence.
