Carving

Description

Carving is a process of shaping blocks using an Adze similar to TFC detailing with a chisel.

Instructions

Right click a block with an Adze while sneaking to begin the process. If the block can be carved, the cursor will now focus on a piece of the block. Right click while not sneaking to carve out the focused piece. Remove as many pieces as you please. The image bellow shows the carving of a Rough Sandstone block.

Carving

If you right click a carving with an Adze while sneaking the shape will get locked. A locked carving cannot be worked on. You can do this when you are finished with the carving, so it cannot be altered by an accidental click. Right click a locked carving while sneaking to unlock it. The image below shows the same carving but it's locked and you can see that no single piece is focused - the entire carving is selected when you look at it.

CarvingLocked

A carved block cannot be moved or turned once started. It can be broken and destroyed, preferably with an Adze.

Some blocks drop items when they are carved, and when the carved stone is destroyed. For example Raw Stone and Rough Stone will drop loose rocks. This presents a means of harvesting some measure of loose rocks by carving out the entire block.

Carving raw stone is possible as long as the carved block is exposed enough. You won't be able to dig out tunnels and entire caves.

The table bellow shows blocks than can be carved, and the amount of material dropped when the entire block has been carved out, or destroyed.

Block Drops Notes Recipes
Raw Stone 1-4 loose rocks Must be sufficiently exposed
Rough Stone 1-4 loose rocks Saddle Quern and Handstone Pressing Stone and Weight Stone
Rough Stone Bricks 4 Loose Rough Stone Bricks
Log Wall 2 Peeled Logs
Stacked Logs 4 logs
Vertical Thick Log Top side must be exposed Chopping Block
Mud Brick 2 mud bricks Mud Brick Chimney
Stone Brick 1 stone brick Brick chimney
Large Stone Brick 1 smooth stone Large brick chimney
Fire Brick 1 fire brick Fire Brick Chimney

The smallest piece that can be carved is 1/4 of the block's size, compared to 1/8 when a chisel is used. Also, it is possible to carve only shallow, 1 piece deep, holes.

Carving modes

There are currently 3 carving modes:

  • Single bit
  • Corner (2x2x2)
  • Side (4x4x1)

Current carving mode can be changed by pressing 'N' (key binding can be configured), also during the carving of a single block.

The selected carving mode is shown in the GUI just right of the tool bar, but only during carving - while looking at an unlocked carving block and holding an Adze.

Selected bit or section is highlighted yellow when it can be carved out, and red when it can't.

Notes

  • Unlike chiseled blocks, a carved block displays the proper texture of the original block for each side, with the exception of sandstone dynamic layer colors.
  • Unlike chiseled blocks, the material of a carved plank or log block remains as "wood".
  • Carving can produce blocks and items matching a 4x4x4 recipe.
  • Carving recipe including carving patterns can be viewed in game when Not Enough Items (NEI) mod is installed.
