Today we started with the Kick-off of the entire project. First a presentation was given by the teachers Danny, Robert and Laurens what exactly was expected of us this period. After this, a presentation was given by the clients Xander van Uffelen and Joris Tieleman of De Volkskrant. The theme we will be working on in the coming weeks is 'Cars in the city'.
In between we had a stand-up with the support group in which we got to know each other based on our earlier work on the Miro board. My support group includes the students: Sergio Eijben, Tim van Alphen, Merlijn Bergevoet, Jordy Fronik and Lars Ruijs.
- Started with thinking about any insights that might be interesting about the theme & creating a mind map with ideas.
- Looking at the datasets but I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of data available.
- Created the 'functional-programming' Repository and typed out the debriefing
What went well was that I immediately continued typing the debriefing into the wiki after I got overwhelmed by the data and datasets. Also because I was quite tired from the first long day with a lot of information, it was good that I gave myself a little more rest by just typing out the debriefing.
Actually, nothing really went wrong today because I haven't really worked with the dataset or code yet.
We started the day with a stand-up with the whole tech track telling that after the stand-up there was a lecture with a JavaScript recap. Despite the fact that I took the Tech block in the second year, it seemed smart to refresh my knowledge by attending this lecture.
Around 4:00 PM we had a stand-up with the support group and Gijs Laarman to discuss what we did, what problems we encounter and what we will continue on Wednesday. After this there was a lecture in which Robert explained how to load the JSON data.
- Looked at the RDW datasets again with the example visualisations and Jordy Fronik's help.
- Having in mind which direction I want to take with my final visualization.
- Watched some videos about Regular Expressions (regex) and the methods .replace(), .split() and .match() on YouTube.
What went right today is that I already started looking at regex as I didn't know it yet. In addition, I thought it was nice that I attended that JavaScript refresher lecture to become familiar with JavaScript again.
What didn't go well today was mainly that I didn't really understand the total assignment yet. I didn't really know where and how to start yet. I have indicated this in the stand-up.
We started the day with a live coding lecture from Laurens who was explaining how to retrieve the JSON data using a server and without a server. He also explained how you can start using certain methods such as .filter () in the Survey dataset (for practice).
Around 4:00 PM we had a stand-up with the support group and Laurens Aarnoudse to discuss what we did, what problems we encounter and what we will continue on Wednesday.
- Getting the JSON Survey data from the general Data Visualisation lessons working to store this as variable with the python server that Laurens talked about in the lecture.
- Watched some videos on YouTube about the methods .filter(), .map() to retrieve my knowledge about these.
- Removed the '#' signs from the eye colors column.
What went right was that I managed to remove all '#' signs from the eye color dataset and that I can continue with this on Thursday.
Today I did not have a lot of concentration, so I felt I could not do that much. Also, I thought you could extract the JSON data from your fetch and save it as variable while you couldn't. I searched for this for 1.5 hours without success.
Around 4:40 PM we had a stand-up with the support group and Gijs Laarman to discuss what we did, what problems we encounter and what we will continue on Wednesday.
- All eye color strings converted to lowercase (.toLowerCase()) and the rgb string converted to 3 numbers in an array.
- The wiki log has been updated all the way through today.
- Watched videos on YouTube how I can convert rgb to hex color code.
We started the day with a lecture from Danny who explained callbacks, promises and async await features. He told us that it is better to understand promises well before you work with async await functions.
After this lecture we had a call with the support groups to brainstorm through a mind map to gain insights for the final delivery. The idea of this is to come up with a subtheme that you can find insights that are interesting for visualizing the data.
After this there was another call with the entire group to discuss these brainstorming sessions. The most important thing today is to come up with different research questions and sub-questions that we find interesting and where a data visualization is the final answer.
At about 4:00 PM there was another stand-up call with the support group to discuss what everyone has done that day and what they will be doing the next day.
- Think about sub-themes of the whole theme of 'cars in the city' and creating a mindmap.
- Creating a total mindmap with the support group.
- Thinking about research questions about the sub-theme environment and accessibility.
We started the day with a stand-up from Laurens who
Helped Merlijn with rgb code
- Started on Curran's D3 tutorials
- Watched the videos of Curran about D3.
- Installed a bundler with Jordy's help
- Watched the videos of Curran about D3.
- Sketching normal and digitally visualizations.
- Make a presentation for the feedback.
- Giving the presentation
- Started updating the wiki.
