\item Reconstructed sounds based on historical, internal, or paleographic evidence are

\subsection{Reconstruction of sounds}
Reconstructed sounds are based on historical, internal, or paleographic evidence.
Reconstructions by applying rules of (complex) orthography are not taken into account.
That implies that proposals like the disharmony hypothesis proposed by
Houston et al. (\cites{lacadena2004}{houstonstuartrobertson1998}) do not contribute to the
phonetic reconstruction process.
The main reason is, that those hypotheses can not guarantee a certain reading and phonetic
assignment, and as such are challenged by Mayanists (\cite[7]{boot2009}).
For instance, complex vowels sometimes derived from disharmonic spellings in the script are
accepted if and only if those vowels can be reconstructed by means of other linguistic methods.

\subsection{Syncope}

Syncope means that a segment in a word is omitted in the written script.
